It's going to be an absolute scorcher this weekend as the heat index is set to pass the 100 mark, but if you're willing to leave comfort of the air conditioning there are plenty of ways to beat the heat.
If you're looking to stay cool in the lap of luxury, many hotels offer day passes for their pools. With perks like bar access and cabana rentals, you'll feel close to paradise without ever leaving The District. Here's our guide to four local hotels with incredible pools.
2. Check out Yards Park and The Wharf
The Yards Park is well known for its wading pool, but with the addition of The Wharf's kid-friendly open-air water park, there are plenty of options for staying cool with the little ones. If you're hanging out in Yards Park without the kids, you may want to stop by Whaley's Rosé Garden for a frozen drink.
Take to the river with a kayak ride on the Potomac or the Anacostia! You don't need to a ton of experience to steer a kayak and the rivers bordering D.C. generally have gentle currents. Although we wouldn't advise swimming in the water, the air feels a little cooler next to the water - just be sure to bring sunscreen. Boating in D.C. has multiple locations in the area and kayak rentals are $16 for a single and $22 for a double.
4. Find a swimming hole
Feeling adventurous? Take a road trip to one of the region's many swimming holes. Although you have tons of options in both Maryland and Virginia, our favorite one is a little off the beaten path near Front Royal, VA. Blue Hole has a rope swing and the water is always refreshing since it gushes out from the Shenandoah Mountains.
To get there, you’ll travel around RT 55 until you hit the intersection with RT 678, also known as Fort Valley Road. There will be a turn off on the left side of the road after two miles. For the truly technical, or those just not familiar with the area, the coordinates are 38.94136, -78.30520. Be sure to stick around too! Front Royal is a great day trip destination.
