Whether your summer romance is over and you're back on dating apps or you've found a lasting love, one thing's for sure - date nights are kind of awful when you're hot, sticky and sweaty. With more thunderstorms and hot days still ahead of us, here are five options that'll keep you cool, dry and focused on your date for the rest of the summer.
If you can't make it to a real pool, a super-Instagrammable pool filled with balls is a good alternative. Fun House, the National Building Museum's summer exhibit, features a giant house with an ice cave-like room made of white styrofoam in addition to the all-white pool area. The icy tones of the exhibit are appealing enough on their own, but the National Building Museum's airy main-hall is also a good way to escape the sweltering heat.
We know, we know - dinner and a movie. Super original. But as movie dates have fallen out of favor, it's time to revive this classic, in part because movie theaters are notoriously chilly. What makes Landmark Atlantic Plumbing Cinema a great choice for a non-sweaty date is that the theaters are small and intimate, they serve strong cocktails you can carry into the movie with you and the AC is decidedly potent. Plus there are plenty of dinner options in the area, catering to every taste and budget.
3. Bar Charley
The only thing better than sipping on a delicious, frozen tiki cocktail is drinking it in a subterranean bar. Bar Charley serves up some of the best tiki drinks in town - they're potent, not overly sweet and you can order some of them frozen. However, what makes it a stand-out date spot is their shareable scorpion bowl, which comes with two straws.
Bar Charley can get busy on popular nights, so that can drive up the temperature a little bit in the bar area. However, you can vacate to the restaurant, which tends to be a little more quiet. If you're looking to share a meal, Charley's PuPu platter comes with crab tater tots and halfsmoke pierogies, among other goodies.
On the note of staying below far away of the sun, Dupont Underground is another fun date that lets you stay subterranean. Dupont Underground is only open Wednesday and Thursday between noon and 5 p.m., but they have tons of events on their calendar, including concerts and silent disco yoga sessions for the more athletic couple. If you want to impress your date with some local knowledge, read all about how Dupont Underground became one of the coolest spots in D.C. here.
Baltimore is a bit of a hike, but there's something relaxing and refreshing about sitting in front of a giant tank of underwater creatures. All of the watery exhibits help keep the temperature down. Although things can get a bit hot and humid in the aquarium's tropical rainforest exhibition, the jellyfish experience is like being in a whole other world - one far away from the summer weather.
