I Tried Clean Sleeping for A Week

I tried clean sleeping for a week and absolutely loved it.

What's 'clean sleeping' you ask? Clean sleeping was popularized by Gwyneth Paltrow in her 2016 book, Goop: Clean Beauty. Like clean eating, clean sleeping believes that your overall well-being depends on making decisions that help you get the best and healthiest night of sleep.

I mean, who doesn't want to look as well rested as Gwyneth. I'll do just about anything to get that glow.

To achieve clean sleeping, you have to follow a few basic rules.

Rule #1: Turn off the electronics before bed. Read, do yoga, mediate, talk to your partner face to face, play with your dog - anything but scroll through your Facebook and IG feeds. I also gave up TV and my phone a solid two hours before bed.

Rule #2: Set a bedtime and stick to it every night, even on the weekends. This was tough for me but I managed. I went to bed every night at 11 p.m. and woke up at 7 a.m. I didn't always fall right asleep right away, one night I was up half the night thinking. You know, solving all the problems in the world. The weekend was the worse but I did it!

Rule #3: No drinking - anything - after 8 p.m. This refers to booze and water. The logic being that you'll sleep better if you don't have to wake up to use the bathroom. I'm currently dieting (again) so this surprisingly wasn't hard for me (shocking). Binge drinking is also discouraged because although booze might help you pass out, you won't sleep as well.

Rule #4: Get a copper-infused pillow. OK, I thought this was super silly and unnecessary until I tried it. You guys, a copper-infused pillow (or pillowcase) is pure luxury. Fair warning, they aren't cheap. I bought this one from Amazon for $38.95. Or you can skip the pillow and just buy a copper infused pillowcase. Another bonus, apparently the copper oxide fibers reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Basically you're fighting wrinkles with your eyes closed and I absolutely love the sound of that. Sold!

Rule #5: Get a sleep cycle app. I downloaded an app and I didn't use it once. You can say I totally failed at that. But I also felt like I didn't need an app to show me that I was sleeping better, I knew I was because I felt it in the morning. I was also trying to use my phone less and I felt like the app was a distraction.

I know, it sounds easy right? And it is - for the most part.

The Result

The hardest part for me was going to bed every night at the same time and giving up electronics. I'm used to relaxing on the couch at night before bed, scrolling though my phone and watching 'This Is U's or binge-watching the newest must-see Netflix series. Clean Sleeping forced me to spend some time with numero uno, me! I actually started to read a book for the first time since my daughter was born (thats super embarrassing to admit) - until now I've been relying on podcasts and audiobooks. I enjoyed the alone time, had more conversations with my husband and overall I slept and felt better in the mornings.

In addition to the goop rules, I also showered at night before bed, bought new sheets and purchased some comfy jammies. I went all in! I say if you're considering Clean Sleeping, go for it!
