With Mother's Day just around the corner, mumsicle is on the brain a lot this week! And with more than 70 percent of U.S. women with children under the age of 18 working outside the home, we know that moms are balancing an incredibly full plate these days. Financial health website WalletHub wanted to determine the best and worst states for working mothers.
Wallethub compared all 50 states plus D.C. across three key dimensions (child care, professional opportunities and work-life balance) using 15 metrics, ranging from the cost of child care to access to pediatricians and the gender pay gap. Turns out, D.C. stacks up pretty well!

The worst states for working moms were Idaho, Louisiana, Alabama, Nevada and South Carolina. Maryland ranked 29th in the study, with Virginia following at 30. In this same study last year, D.C. came in 15th overall, while Virginia ranked 21st and Maryland 30th.
How D.C. ranks for working moms:

- 2nd -- Parental-leave policy score
- 3rd -- Ratio of female to male executives

Where do we not rank well for working moms? While we were the 2nd best place for professional opportunities (behind Vermont), our child care ranking was ninth. Turns out working mommas in D.C. are paying more for child care services than women in any other state, shelling out a whopping 26 percent of their salaries to cover child care. In comparison, the lowest child care costs were found in Mississippi, where moms contribute around 9.6 percent of their salaries to child care. Our school system quality was also ranked the fourth lowest in the study, we have the fifth highest female unemployment rate, our average work week in hours was the third highest and our commute time in minutes was also the third highest in the study.
So perhaps this Mother's Day, give momma bear an extra big hug, and acknowledge all that she is fighting against to be the best mother and employee she can be!
