How to kick back and relax in D.C. - without touching booze

D.C. loves two things – alcohol and complaining about the metro. Although no one is immune to SafeTrack, it seems equally hard to escape booze when everyone’s joining a beer-based sports league or making plans over happy hour. If you’re trying to cut back, quit entirely or just don’t like drinking, socializing can feel like an uphill battle in the DMV, so here are some suggestions for getting in your social time without imbibing.

1. Topgolf

Even if you’re an inexperienced or flat-out bad golfer, Topgolf gives you the chance to grab a basket of balls and whack them onto the green – it’s especially satisfying if you get a spot on the upper level! Although they do have alcohol available at their Alexandria and Loudoun locations, it’s relatively easy to avoid since the bar is typically far away from the play area.

2.Chilled out yoga classes

Yoga classes may not seem especially social, but it’s a lot easier to relax with friends in a more novel environment, like the cat yoga class at Crumbs and Whiskers. Plus, you can hang around afterwards and cuddle with some cats over coffee or tea.

Forget the bike-and-brew tours, grab a helmet and pedal around the city. If you want to play tourist, the monuments are always a little more magical at night. However, locals or anyone who wants to feel like they’ve escaped the city should head out to Kingman Island. The trails aren’t especially long, but it’s a pretty ride and it’s not far from the H Street Corridor if you want to grab a bite to eat afterwards. If biking isn't really your speed, you can also take to the water and kayak around the Anacostia.

For those who don’t have a bike, this is a good time to check out Capital Bikeshare! Just be sure to check in your bike within 30 minutes.

4.Music venues

A lot of venues have a drink minimum, but there are several great options in D.C. that don’t require you to drink up. 9:30 Club usually features well-known talent, Black Cat often hosts local bands and Songbyrd offers up off-the-radar sounds in their venue, in addition to record-listening nights.

5.Learn how to cook

This is an especially good option if you’re trying to come up with a fun, romantic date. Although there are a variety of classes in the DMV, Cozymeal lets you check out the menu beforehand, so you can see ahead of time if there will be alcohol around. Plus, you have the option of booking a private class for you and one other person!
