Introducing Shaw newcomers Unconventional Diner and Morris American Bar

The District’s Shaw neighborhood is already known for its historic hipness and edgy vibe, but it’s about to be known as the home of two of DC’s newest hot spots: Unconventional Diner and Morris American Bar.

The diner and bar are both connected to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, and their opening marks an exciting time for the neighborhood. Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia, predicts that these additions will offer an enhanced experienced and delicious options for District residents as well as convention attendees and other visitors.

Unconventional Diner is the brainchild of acclaimed chef David Deshaies and a concept he’s realized at the suggestion of his late mentor, celebrated chef Michele Richard. The diner will feature modern comfort food with an unexpected twist as well as plenty of offerings from the bakery.

Deshaies served as the executive chef at Citronelle for over a decade and more recently has acted as executive chef, general manager and partner at Central Michel Richard, the celebrated American bistro. Unconventional Diner is opening exclusively for dinner to start but will soon be a venue for breakfast and lunch as well as affordable craft cocktails, American beer and international wines.

Morris American Bar is also presented by a veteran of DC’s restaurant scene, master cocktail craftsman David Strauss. Strauss is known for his work at Dupont speakeasy The Sheppard and the Ivy Room at Republic Restoratives, where he serves as head bartender and program director. Morris is his “an ode to the American bar” and will feature fine cocktails whose “concepts and techniques were distinctively born, bread and honed over time in the United States.”

Strauss was mentored by legendary bartender and cocktail king Sasha Petraske, and the training shows. Cocktails at Morris will be crafted with ice cut from perfectly distilled water, the purest ingredients and juices squeezed fresh daily. From the knowledgeable staff to the pride in workmanship, Morris American Bar is a place where guests can enjoy quality drinks and time with their friends in a comfortable upscale setting.

Along with other Convention Center retailers like Union Kitchen Grocery and Urban Athletic Club, these two new additions present exciting possibilities for DC’s residents and visitors.
