Lucky Dog's Annual Casino Night will benefit animals displaced by the hurricanes

In the last couple of months, multiple hurricanes have brought serious devastation to the people of Houston, Florida, Puerto Rico and many other Caribbean islands. The residents of those areas suffered major losses. What is not as commonly highlighted in the media are the number of animals affected by these natural disasters. But one local organization, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, has made it their mission to help save as many animals as possible from the areas impacted.

Lucky Dog will host its 5th Annual Casino Night fundraiser on Saturday, October 21, at Clarendon Ballroom in Arlington from 7-11 p.m. with all the proceeds raised going to support the organization's ongoing hurricane relief efforts.

“Lucky Dog is committed to helping not just animals impacted by the recent trifecta of hurricanes but also keeping our focus on the thousands of animals in need here in the southeastern United States,” said Mirah Horowitz, executive director and founder of Lucky Dog. “We have more than doubled our intake in the past two months, which makes events like Casino Night more important than ever. It’s a fun way for the D.C. community to support other areas that are far less fortunate, particularly rescuers in Puerto Rico who have lost so much.”

Lucky Dog rescued more than 100 dogs from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and has sent more than 6,000 pounds of dog and cat supplies to shelter partners in Puerto Rico impacted by Hurricane Maria. Lucky Dog is also organizing an animal relief flight in the coming weeks to bring dogs out of Puerto Rico, and funding from Casino Night will make that effort possible.

"We have gathered more than 20,000 pounds of supplies to send down to Puerto Rico," said Horowitz. "Working with one of the major airlines, we have sent 6,500 down to our partners, and they are distributing the supplies to individuals around the island, even to the island of Culebra. We are not going to stop until we know that our friends -- our Lucky Dog family -- are back on track."

Guests will have the chance to test their luck at craps, roulette, blackjack, Texas Hold ‘em, and the money wheel. In addition to Las Vegas style gaming, the evening will feature live music from Lulu’s World Rock Band, a silent auction, fantastic food and drink with all proceeds benefiting the thousands of homeless and abandoned animals Lucky Dog saves each year.

"We want this Casino Night to be the biggest and best yet," added Horowitz. "We hope everyone has more than just a good time though. We hope that they leave with an understanding of what Lucky Dog does and why, in this moment in history, --following three hurricanes and the complete devastation of the island of Puerto Rico -- it is so important to support animal rescue; why the work that we are doing is not just about saving dogs and cats. It is about providing hope, about showing people and animals who have faced the worst what this world has to offer and that we have their backs."
