At your annual eye exam, your optometrist snaps a few pictures of the inside of your eyes - one of the most important being retinal imaging. A retinal image is a clear photo of your eye structure that allows your doctor to make an early diagnosis of any ocular health problems. Pretty cool, right?
You know what's cooler? Throughout the month of March, MyEyeDr. offices in the Washington, D.C., metro-area will donate $1 for every retinal photo taken to support Make March Matter. Here's what you need to know:
What is retinal imaging?
Retinal imaging creates a digital image of the retina, blood vessels, and optic nerve located at the back of the eye, allowing your doctor to diagnose any systemic health problems or changes within the eye structure. The process is quick and painless.
What is the retina?
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), "The retina is the layer of nerve cells lining the back wall inside the eye. This layer senses light and sends signals to the brain so you can see."
Many eye-related diseases are caused when the retina or other parts of the eye become damaged. Since most symptoms are not noticed right away, people go a long time without realizing something is wrong. This is why it is important to not only get your eyes checked regularly but to get a comprehensive exam, one that includes retinal imaging.
Your eye exam can help save lives.
Each year, members of the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia community have an opportunity to support their favorite businesses and "Make March Matter" for the 230,000 kids cared for by Children's National. All proceeds will go to helping improve children's health ensuring every child receives exceptional care.
Last year, MyEye Dr. donated over $14,000 to Children's National. You can help surpass that goal this year by getting your comprehensive eye exam.
