Virginia and Maryland both rank in top 10 charitable states

I hope you didn't spend ALL your monies in a Black Friday or a Cyber Monday craze, because today is all about giving to others-- Happy #GivingTuesday, friends!

The good news is that according to the latest World Giving Index, Americans are pretty generous with their dollars! We ranked No. 4 out of 140 countries studied, giving more than $410 billion in 2017 to charity -- more than 70 percent of the funds came directly from individuals according to the National Philanthropic Trust. And we're also out there giving our time with 63 million people volunteering a combined 7.9 billion hours per year.

In the spirit of inspiring altruism, WalletHub determined the most charitable of the 50 states by comparing them across 18 key indicators of charitable behavior, ranging from volunteer rates to share of income donated to helping the homeless. Turns out those of us in the DMV are pretty darn good at the giving game: Maryland was ranked as the fourth most charitable state, while Virginia came in sixth -- D.C. was not included in the study.
