Theater Tuesday: 4 can't-miss November shows

We know it's a busy time of year, but between Election Day and Thanksgiving, it's a really thriving time for theater in the DMV, so make time for a show! This month we are highlighting four shows with strong female leads, and unique story lines.

Imagination Stage's "Cinderella", for example, is a twist on the old story. This piece shows a bold, sword-fighting princess who doesn't take any stuff from anyone. Scena Theatre is presenting an all-female cast in "A Woman of No Importance." Keegan Theatre showcases the D.C. area premiere of a musical adaptation of Shakespeare's "As You Like It."

  • Written by William Shakespeare, adapted by Shaina Tabb & Laurie Woolery and directed by Josh Sticklin and Cara Gabriel
  • Keegan Theatre, 1742 Church St. NW
  • Now - December 2
  • Tickets: $25-$58

Named one of The New York Times’ best shows of 2017, "As you Like It" is an immersive dream-like tale of faithful friends, feuding families and lovers in disguise. Forced from their homes, Orlando, Duke Senior, his daughter Rosalind and niece Celia, escape to the Forest of Arden, a fantastical place of transformation, where all are welcomed and embraced. Lost amidst the trees, the refugees find community and acceptance under the stars.

  • Written by Oscar Wilde and directed by Robert McNamara
  • Presented by Scena Theatre at Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H St. NE
  • Now - December 2
  • Tickets: $15-$45

Don’t miss Scena’s witty take on the battle of the sexes in this brazen, classic play with an all-female cast. The timeless power struggle between guys and gals is set against the backdrop of 1930s Hollywood—when Tinsel Town was both American and British. See cads, scoundrels and vixens battle over who’s “in” and who’s “out”. Hilarity abounds in this “He said / She said” feminist take on Wilde’s dark comedy of manners.

  • Written by Guy Bolton, P.G. Wodehouse, Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse and directed by Molly Smith
  • Arena Stage, 1101 Sixth St. SW
  • Now - December 23
  • Tickets: - $51 - $105

The SS American has set sail from NY to London. Aboard, the lovelorn Billy has stowed away on a mission to stop the marriage of his mystery muse, countess Hope Harcourt, to the millionaire Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Now, it is up to Billy -- with the help of showgirls, sailors, and public enemy #13 -- to find, woo and win back his true love. Unlikely alliances arise as mischief and mayhem ensue in this madcap musical by beloved composer and Tony Award winner Cole Porter.

  • Written by Alyn Caradelli and directed by Kathryn Chase Bryer
  • Imagination Stage, 4908 Auburn Ave. Bethesda, M.D.
  • Now - January 6, 2019
  • Tickets: $15-$35
