We are talking to you Virginia and Maryland, because according to a study done by WalletHub, you guys are within the top 15 happiest states in America.
In this study, WalletHub’s analysts drew upon the findings of “happiness” research to determine which environmental factors are linked to a person’s overall well-being and satisfaction with life. According to WalletHub, previous studies have found that good economic, emotional, physical and social health are all key to a well-balanced and fulfilled life.
To determine where Americans exhibit the best combination of these factors, Wallethub examined the 50 states across 28 key metrics, ranging from depression rate to sports participation rate to income growth.
Maryland came in at the 11th happiest state with Virginia trailing right behind at 12. Below are some of the key findings:

- Physical health: 8th
- Share of adult depression: 9th
- Average leisure time spent per day: 8th
- Income level: 6th
Virginia (Out of 50 states with 1 being the best)
- Food insecurity: 7th
- Share of adult depression: 5th
- Income level: 2nd
- Economic confidence: 8th
