Weekend Report: 9 events not to miss this weekend

Thursday, June 15

Rooftop opening party of Insignia on M: Enjoy breathtaking views, delicious food and beverages, and interactive art presented by Fathom DC artists, including a live painting by Kasey O’Boyle and a collaborative art piece that guests will contribute to on 5’ x 6’ canvases. Not only will you be able to watch and participate in live art exhibits, but guests will vibe along to music from TRES CHILL, enjoy innovative, southern-inspired hors d'oeuvres from Insignia’s neighbors at Due South, imbibe with a full open bar, and take in stunning rooftop views. Guests can click here to purchase their $20 tickets – all proceeds go to Washington Project for the Arts.

Havana Nights: Experience a bit of Cuba at the Graham Hotel's "Havana Nights" rooftop party. Enjoy specialty cocktails such as Cuba Libres, Mojitos and Hemmingway Daquiris, live cigar rollings, a whole roasted pig with traditional Cuban accouterments and Cuban music. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Cuba Skate, a D.C. based nonprofit organization, whose aim is to support and grow the Cuban skateboarding community by providing access to skateboarding equipment that is otherwise unavailable on the island of Cuba. Awesome Con 2017: (June 16 - 18) Awesome Con is a comic-con that embraces all aspects of geekdom and pop culture, with a wide assortment of comic books, collectibles, toys, games, original art, cosplay, and more. Special events include discussion panels, costume contests, trivia contests, gaming tournaments, and tons of activities for kids. Awesome Con will take place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival at the National Harbor: (June 16-17) Enjoy unlimited beer and bourbon as you stroll from table to table and tent to tent. Also, don't forget to eat! Pig out on a great barbeque selection – pulled pork from whole hogs, ribs, brisket, chickens, sausages and any fixins’ you could imagine.

The Sound of Music: The Kennedy Center is alive with The Sound of Music! The spirited, romantic, and beloved musical will thrill once again with its Tony, Grammy, and Oscar-winning score in this brand new production, directed by three-time Tony winner Jack O'Brien. Hedwig and the Angry Inch: Innovative, heartbreaking, and wickedly funny, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is "the most exciting rock score written for the theater since, oh, ever!" (Time). This four-time Tony-winning, genre-bending sensation promises to take DC by storm! The Kennedy Center, 2700 F St NW, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.,

DC Jazz Festival: The DC JazzFest will have more than 125 performances in 40+ venues, and will present an amazing array of emerging and master-level talent that includes more than 90 bands and 300 artists! This is the last weekend to check out the festival, so make sure to go!

30th Annual Bark Ball: The 30th edition of Washington’s only black-tie ball for canines and their human companions takes place Saturday, June 17, when the Humane Rescue Alliance’s Bark Ball returns. This DC institution features 1,000 attendees and 500 dogs in a formal affair, gracing the elegant ballroom of the Washington Hilton, 1919 Connecticut Avenue, NW, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
