7 places to watch, cheer and drink during the World Cup

The wait is over! After four long years, the 2018 FIFA World Cup kicks off June 14 in host nation Russia. The month-long tournament spreads soccer fever around the globe, encouraging everyone to get in on the action and celebrate the biggest party in the world. Of course, local bars and restaurants will also join in on the World Cup action, giving people a place to cheer, celebrate and catch each gut-wrenching game.

Here are a few local spots to feed the soccer fiend inside of you during the 2018 World Cup.

DC World Cup HQ

On Thursday, June 14th, “U Street Pop Up” will welcome DC World Cup HQ, (1214 U St. NW) D.C.’s first ever World Cup pop-up bar. DC World Cup HQ is the place to be for every live match and replay of each game. Shareable cocktails, frose beer steins and wine carafes will all be available and the beverage rotation will be inspired by the competing countries. Plus, DC World Cup HQ has partnered with Chef Alex McCoy from Lucky Buns and will be dishing up World Cup-inspired burgers every day. Missing your team play because of work? DC World Cup HQ has got you covered with their “Happy Hour Rewind” from 4-7 p.m. each day, during which each game will be replayed and daily food and drink specials will be offered. The pop-up will run from Thursday, June 14-Sunday, July 15, open every single day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

World Cup Bar DC

Right next door to the future home of the DC United, World Cup Bar DC (1901 1st St. SW) boasts 42,000-square-feet of outdoor space for soccer fans to get their kicks every day during the World Cup starting at 8 a.m. Enjoy the game on a 20-foot LED video wall while you sip specialty flights and beers from the countries that are playing that day. If you get bored, take a break in the social games lounge featuring velcro soccer darts, food trucks, picnic tables and a faux astroturf seating area.
