I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream sandwiches. These sweet treats will help you cool down as temperatures start to rise.
Morocco’s signature spice blend ras el hanout gives this ice cream a complex flavor that keeps you guessing about just what went into the seasoning mix. Was that a hint of cumin? A whisper of cardamom? Maybe a pinch of clove? The sweet and savory ice cream is edged with ras el hanout spiced pecans and sandwiched between chocolate cookies. The bite-sized treat is served as a part of the cookie platter.
Brioche-like babka, a Eastern European coffee cake, is transformed from a breakfast treat into a full-on dessert. Spongy slices of the chocolate swirled bread hold vanilla bean gelato made locally by Dolci Gelati.
There are several gluttonous ice cream sandwiches featuring the shop’s vanilla bean frozen custard, including those subbing in a Twinkie and rum cake for the cookie bookends. Our favorite features a warm apple cider cake doughnut split open and packed with custard – then drenched with caramel sauce for good measure.
Customers can mix and match to create their own ice cream sandwiches. Standout combos include peanut butter ice cream smooshed between chocolate chip cookies and sugar cookies held together with a scoop of ginger ice cream.
If you still have room after taking down one of these monster hoagies – plus mandatory pickles, of course – there’s a finale awaiting. A pair of the deli’s oatmeal walnut chocolate chip cookies holds a substantial scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.
Bacon makes everything better. Case in point is this ice cream sandwich, which is features chocolate chip cookies and caramel bourbon gelato. It’s dipped in chocolate sauce and then rolled in crushed peanuts and bacon bits.
Pastry chef-owner Meredith Tomason should add another title to her business card: queen of the ice cream sandwiches. The summer, she’s offering up four options: lemon buttermilk sherbet with sugar cookies, sour cream sorghum ice cream with gingersnap cookies, lavender ice cream with triple chocolate cookies, and strawberry lemonade sorbet with lemon shortbread cookies.
Executive chef Jammir Gray puts her own her own spin on San Fran’s classic ice cream sando, the It’s-It – a scoop vanilla ice cream between oatmeal cookies, all covered in a chocolate shell. Her version subs in dulce de leche ice cream, but otherwise keeps it classic.
The cold case embedded in the counter features the drive through's ready-to-bake frozen biscuits, as well as ice cream sandwiches from D.C.'s Milk Cult. The rectangular goodies feature chocolate chip cookies and vanilla ice cream.
