Maydan named second best new restaurant in country by Bon Appétit

I think at this point it is safe to say that Bon Appétit has the hots for the D.C. dining scene -- and rightfully so! Rose Previte's Middle Eastern concept, Maydan, was named the second best new restaurant in the country, right behind Oklahoma City's Nonesuch, on Bon Appétit's newly released "Hot 10: America's Best New Restaurants 2018" list.

Over the last three years, a pattern has emerged with Bon Appétit's "50 Best New Restaurants" list and its consequently narrowed down "Hot 10 New Restaurants" list. For the third year in a row, three D.C. establishments found their way onto Bon Appétit's list of 50 nominees for America’s Best New Restaurants: Elle,The Line (including A Rake’s Progress, Brothers and Sisters, and Spoken English) and Maydan. However, it's the first year since 2016 that one of the D.C. elite made its way off the top 50 list to the final 10 list.

In 2016, The Dabney, Tail Up Goat and Bad Saint all made the cut, before Bad Saint snagged the number two spot in the country and D.C. was named the "Restaurant City of the Year" by the magazine. The tradition continued in 2017, with Himitsu, Pineapple & Pearls and Timber Pizza Company making the top 50, but none of the establishments were ranked in the final 10 last year. In 2015, only Thip Khao was among the top 50, but in 2014 Rose's Luxury was named the hottest new restaurant in the country.

There was a slight format change on the list this year in that the descriptions of the Hot 10 restaurants were penned by the owners/chefs themselves rather than by the curator of the list, Andrew Knowlton. However, Knwolton still weighed in on his choices.

What sets these ten establishments apart from this year’s bazillion openings? The ability to take a timeless concept and turn it on its head," said Knowlton. "To cook the dishes your parents grew up on but make them your own. To serve the food you believe in without compromise. To make anyone who stumbles into your restaurant feel instantly welcome. Those are (just a few of) the characteristics that blow us away year after year as we scour the country in search of the Hot 10: our annual list of the best new restaurants. Welcome to the most delicious, exciting, and just plain fun places to eat in America right now.

If you have not yet dined at Maydan, get to booking what is sure to be an impossible reservation. In the meantime, bone up on Previte's story over at Bon Appétit, and click through our mouthwatering gallery so you know what you're in for!
