The iconic Japanese restaurant loved by Hollywood celebs and the entire Kardashian clan has made its way to Washington. Nobu, located on the ground floor of the new 2501 M Street Residences opened its doors to the public for dinner service yesterday (September 12).
Nobu DC has more than 11,000 square feet of space including the Bar & Lounge, Dining Room and Sushi Bar, and multiple private event spaces. The interior of Nobu ties together traditional Japanese influences and contemporary design, which makes it the perfect location to sit with friends/family and enjoy a cocktail (or two) with a delicious meal.
We met with Nobu Bar Manager, Thuy Hong to pick the perfect must-have dishes with an expert bar pairing for first-timers or seasoned diners.
Tiradito paired with a Matsuhisa Martini
"The Matsuhisa Martini is one of our signature martinis with Chef Nobu's last name included in the name of the martini," said Hong. "We use our Hokusetsu Sake, which is made exclusively for Nobu, with our Spring 44 Vodka, which is a boutique vodka, and a little bit of pickled ginger. So it's super dry and easy to drink. It is our version of a saketini."
"The reason we are pairing it with the Tiradito is because Tiradito is very light, has lots of citrus with a little spice and you also get a little spice and the dryness from the martini, which makes it the perfect pair," added Hong.
Rock Shrimp Tempura with creamy spicy sauce paired with Japanese Sansho Craft Beer
"The Rock Shrimp Tempura is one of our signature classic Nobu dishes. You can expect bite sized Rock Shrimp, light tempura with great texture, and we use our signature creamy spicy sauce," explained Hong. "Tempura and beer classically go together." The Rock Shrimp Tempura is paired with the Japanese Sansho Beer, a craft ale, which is a little more malty on the nose, but has a well rounded flavor.
Tuna Sashimi Salad paired with the DC exclusive cocktail, 25th & M
25th & M uses Casamigos Reposado Tequila, with a little bit of dill, orange, lime, and is floated with privately labeled Nobu Cabernet. "We are pairing the 25th & M with the Tuna Sashimi Salad because the drink itself is refreshing, so it pairs well with this savory signature salad," added Hong.
The Tuna Sashimi Salad includes slightly seared tuna piled high with mixed greens and the dressing is where the magic is at. "It's our Matsuhisa Soy Onion dressing, so it's savory, rich, and the onions absorb all of the ingredients together. The cocktail really brightens up this dish."
