Wake up with 14 new breakfast sandwiches around the DMV

Mom always says breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why not do it up right? Breakfast sandwiches can’t be beat as a source of energy and satisfaction, and new options are always popping up at restaurants and cafés across the region. Here are 14 new sammies to wake up with, whether you’re looking for fuel for your 8 a.m. meeting or a hearty helping of carbs on a lazy Sunday.

Barrel

When your morning is off to a slow start thanks to a few too many drams of bourbon, find comfort in the ham, egg, and cheese sandwich at Barrel, with cherry mustard and avocado ($15).

Centrolina

Amy Brandwein’s Italian market and restaurant now offers a breakfast menu. Try the egg and cheese sandwich with your choice of seasonal greens, pancetta, mortadella, or sausage on a Bread Furst brioche bun ($11). If you’re in the mood for something sweet, opt for the three-layered PB&J on buckwheat pancakes with house jam and bananas ($11).

City Perch

Head to North Bethesda’s bustling Pike & Rose development for a brunch burger from City Perch ($19.99). The beef is topped with candied bacon, sharp cheddar, and a fried egg.

Dirty Habit

After a night of embracing your own dirty habits, recover with the brunch burrito, filled with scrambled eggs, chorizo, sautéed mushrooms and spinach, and salsa verde ($15).

G by Mike Isabella

The Markgriddle is new to the “Breakfast of Champions” section of G’s menu ($8). The sandwich is stacked with house breakfast sausage, cheddar, and a duck egg on a jalapeño cheddar biscuit.

Lil’ B

Chef David Guas is opening his newest spot inside The Darcy Hotel late next week, and the urban coffee shop will serve build-your-own AM-Wiches. Start with a buttermilk biscuit or Parker House roll, then add bacon, ham, turkey sausage, egg, or cheese ($2+).

Marcus

Thanks to Chef Marcus Samuelsson, you don’t even have to get out of bed to enjoy a breakfast sandwich at the MGM National Harbor. The Beaten Biscuit Sandwich (cheesy scrambled egg, country ham, and tomato jam) is available through in-room dining and at the restaurant ($12).

Mason Dixie Biscuit Co.

It’s hard to beat a fresh Mason Dixie biscuit, but the Mason Dixie biscuit sandwich takes it to the next level ($5.45). The flaky buttermilk beauty is enhanced by egg, cheddar, and Virginia ham.

On Rye

This modern iteration of a Jewish deli just launched an all-day breakfast menu, featuring an egg and cheese sandwich: omelet, cheddar, arugula, and Russian dressing on a toasted challah Kaiser roll ($5.99). Add avocado or pastrami “bacon” if you’re feeling adventurous.

Quarter + Glory

Brunch at a cocktail bar may seem counterintuitive, but Quarter + Glory’s offerings are sure to cure your hangover. Sop up last night’s mistakes with the breakfast burger (a fried egg and bacon on an English muffin) or the fried chicken sandwich served on a cheddar jalapeño waffle ($15, $12).

Shouk

Starting your morning with plant-based protein means you won’t run out of steam by noon. The new breakfast pita at Shouk is stuffed with a hearty “omelet” of chickpea flour, mushroom, asparagus, potato, and onion. The pita is layered with avocado and a chopped salad of roasted red pepper, tomato, cucumber, onion, and arugula ($9.75).

Soapstone Market

This charming neighborhood market in Van Ness offers a simple yet satisfying morning meal. Their breakfast sandwich is bacon, cheddar, and egg on a croissant or a Bullfrog Bagel ($6.99).

The Bird

Poultry is the star attraction at this Logan Circle roost, so naturally the breakfast sandwich features an organic fried chicken thigh, plus an egg, Thai chili mayo, and pickles ($13).

Via Umbria

Chef Liam LaCivita recently took over the kitchen at this Italian market-café and added a porchetta breakfast sandwich with an over-easy egg, provolone, honey butter, and baby greens on ciabattini ($9). There are also several other new morning options, like smoked salmon sandwich and a verdure bruschetta.
