I don't know about you, but when the thermometers are over 90, the last thing I want to do is my hair. Because, let's face it, no matter what I do, the humidity has a mind of its own and will take control the minute I step outside. But we've paired up with Amanda Moran and Tracey Garcia, the co-founders and co-CEOs of -StyleMeBar- to learn three summer-proof hairstyles and the products we'll need to master them.
1. The Bun
From top buns to half-up buns and even the man bun, buns are in this summer and they're not going anywhere. This easy style looks great when neatly constructed around the top of your head, is totally work appropriate and won’t get ruined on your walk from the metro. Recently, we’ve seen a fun spin on the bun, the half-up bun, where the front part of your hair is in a bun, leaving the rest down. Your hair will be much lighter and on trend. We recently saw a pretty bun with a few tendrils hanging on each side, which is another cute option. Of course, we can’t talk about buns without mentioning the man bun! Ever since Leonardo DiCaprio popularized it a year ago, we love seeing guys take the bun plunge!
2. Loose fishtail braids
We are seeing tons of braids this season, but our favorite has to be the fishtail. Whether worn messy or tight, the fishtail looks modern and sleek. Try putting your hair in a ponytail, braiding the tail then twisting it around into a bun for a cool effect
3. The classic slick back
One of our all-time favorite summer hairstyles is an elegant, slicked-back do. This look is timeless and works well with long or short hair. For long hair, part your hair in the middle, or along one side for a more dramatic feel. Using water and your hands to smooth your hair back is usually enough to keep it in place, but if not, use a drop or two of hair gel to slick it back.
4. Beach/Sea Salt spray
We all know your sleek blow-out and perfectly curled ends are no match for D.C. humidity. So we suggest giving the flat iron and curling iron the summer off and embracing the natural looks you can create with a beach or salt spray. Inspired by Gisele Bundchen, spray liberally on semi-dry hair and muss with your fingers. There’s no need to spend a ton of money, as plenty of good sea salt sprays are available at the drug store, or your salon.
5. Clarifying shampoo
Ocean water, chlorine and lots of sun exposure can be really hard on your hair. A good clarifying shampoo will lift the impurities from the hard water in chlorine from your hair. Your normal shampoo contains more moisturizing ingredients that make hair shiny and smooth, but a good clarifying shampoo is all about the clean so it contains more surfactants, or cleansing agents. Our pick? Redken Cleansing Cream Shampoo.
6. Anti-humidity spray
No Washingtonian should be forced to go an entire season without smooth, perfectly coiffed hair, regardless of the weather. For the days when you’re drawn like a magnet to your round brush and hair dryer, we highly recommend investing in an anti-humidity spray. Oribe Anti-Humidity Spray is our all-time favorite, any time of year -- it will keep your hair smooth after a blowout and even protect curls from frizzing.
