7 tips to give your closet and home a fall makeover

Nurtured at an early age by her parents to express herself creatively, Lorra Rivers had an early start in channeling and shaping her blossoming design talents; weaving looms and pottery wheels were her toys of choice.

A journey filled with industrial arts and architectural drafting classes led her to pursue a career in architecture. With the encouragement of her high school drafting instructor to explore all possibilities, she was exposed to the wonders of interior design.

Since graduating from Howard University with a BS in Interior Design in 1987, Lorra embarked on what is now a more than 27-year career creating beautiful interiors in both the residential and healthcare markets. Being one who seeks out challenges, Lorra focused her design talents towards furniture design.

Upon the urging of her design mentor, she decided to apply her core design principles towards handbags and accessories. Her leather handbag and accessory brand, LORRARIVERS, showcases her passion for the beauty of nature. Having a very modernist view towards design, Lorra incorporates clean sculptural lines juxtaposed with beautiful exotic textures and patterns.

A born and raised Washingtonian, Lorra’s aesthetic definitely has an urban vibe. Drawing inspiration from both her hometown as well as NYC, the city in which she conducts business, the energy of the arts and culture can be seen throughout her designs.

Lorra is helping DC Refined readers get their homes and closets ready for this cooler weather, with an exclusive peek at her top decor and fashion tips for the season.

1. Surround yourself with warm coziness

It’s that time of year again when we prepare to hibernate for the cold winter months ahead. Why not surround yourself with rich fall jewel-tones to keep you warm and toasty?

2. Go big or go home with bold graphics

Make a bold statement that reflects that ‘extrovert’ hidden deep within! Go grand with a wall covering or small with an accent chair or pillow.

3. Woosah within the serene world of neutrals

Beige is the new black…who knew!? When mixed with the right balance of shades and textures, a beige palette produces one of the most soothing environments.

4. Proudly display your favorite collection…curation style

Grouping items together makes for a strong visual impact. So, proudly show off your cherished collectibles. Your friends will think they’ve stepped into a museum exhibit!

5. Perk right up with a little dose of brightness

For those of us that suffer from the winter blues, a bright splash of color could be just what the doctor ordered! Bright colors bring energy to a space. Create a bright, cheery private sanctuary or strategically sprinkle it within your existing space.

6. Metallic effects, shimmer and glimmer…yes, please

Metallic leather handbags are exploding back on the scene once again. From high impact reflective to subdued shimmer, these bags are guaranteed to be the star of the show!

7. Embrace the boxy bag
