From '20s flapper to '90s plaid, all the decades’ trends eventually come back around. Right now we are seeing a resurgence of the white go-go boot.
You have probably seen the cute booties in magazines, on celebrities or in your favorite fashion blogs. Maybe you even bought a pair thinking, “they are white they will go with everything!” Well, as Nordstrom Styling Director Ruth Basloe explained, “while we may think of white as a neutral, it is bright, especially next to dark neutral (i.e navy, dark gray, black).”
So, we are here for a bit of fashion guidance on how to wear your new winter white heeled boots. First, if you are wearing the white sock booties -- another major trend right now -- stylist Stara Pezeshkian says she loves them with long skirts, midi dresses or tapered pants. Ruth says if you are wearing a pointy-toed heeled ankle booties, you can show them off with flare or straight cropped jeans or pants. And if you are donning white boots with a block heel and rounded toe, they pair best with the mid-length skirts or dresses.
Since the white boots are such a blast from the past, I asked both stylists how to put a retro spin on an outfit for "a night on town" and got two very different responses. Stara took it back to the '60s and said she would wear them with a head scarf and a pair of high-waist hot pants. When the boots became trendy, the mini skirt and hot pants were, well… hot!
Although this gives it a '60s vibe, back when these boots first became popular they had a different shape. According to my mother who was a young teen in Brooklyn during that time, “the go-go boot was a mid-calf, wide boot usually with a black wide heel, which when you see it immediately identifies as '60s."
Meanwhile, Ruth attributes the resurgence of the white bootie to the overall return of '80s trends. She says to push your look in that direction, pair them with a cropped, high-waist jeans and complete the look with a menswear blazer with a strong shoulder.
Lastly, I asked how to dress a pair of bright white booties if your style errs more on the conservative side. Ruth suggests a pointy-toed boot with a long full pant so you just see the toe. You could even tone it down a bit by opting for a pant in a softer shade, like light grey. Stara says white booties are perfect to wear with suits. Both of these suggested looks are great ways to put a hip and trendy spin on a business casual outfit for a work event or the office.
Although we turned to the experts, fashion is what one makes of it; Stara said it perfectly: “In fashion I try not to follow ‘rules’ as personal creativity is the key to success.”
