As summer is winding down and fall is looming right around the corner, I'm sadly watching my summer tan start to fade. This year is a bit different however because I’ve noticed that the sun has left it’s mark, literally, on my face! Yes, I’m talking about pesky sun spots!
To be honest, I thought that I was immune to these small perils of aging…(ah, the glorious naiveté of being in your 20’s). However, as these small brownish spots have decided to stick around on parts of my face where I got the most sun exposure, I’ve done some research as to how to treat these spots, and more importantly, prevent more from showing up in the future. If you’re seeing the effects of the summer sun like I am, try these products to minimize uneven skin tones and get back to that fresh glow!
Collectively, it seems the key is VITAMIN C! Most of the products I came across had a good amount of Vitamin C to brighten the skin and diminish the appearance of dark spots.
Try these two products together:
These products include five sources of Vitamin C to brighten, firm, and support skin’s natural collagen. The oil hydrates and contains rose hips oil, omegas, and vitamins A and C. For an extra boost of radiance, use these two at the same time. The owner of Christine Face and Body on Mercer Island, Christine Poythress gave me the low down on how to achieve beautiful spot free skin.
“The use of Lactic, Glycolic, and salicylic acid along with retinol, vitamin c , and many other botanicals daily works for skin brightening. The best way to diminish spots or brighten skin is to stay of the sun and wearing Spf 50 daily is recommended,” says Pothress. She continues on to recommend the following treatments.
Overnight Retinol Repair:
Dermalogica makes a product that is 1% Retinol call Overnight Retinol Repair and is the strongest and best for smoothing out texture and brightening pigmentation. Must be used with a regular skin regimen.
The use of IPL or PhotoFacial , Intense Pulse Light, is a pretty sure fire way to get rid of pigmentation on the skin. “For deep extreme pigmentation, your best bet would be laser removal and deep peels,” says Pothress. On a budget? Try these natural remedies that may not be as effective but would be helpful for minimal pigmentation to brighten and even out skin.
The citric acid in lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent which exfoliates your skin and reduces the appearance of age spots. Looks like lemon juice is handy for other things besides cockatils or lightening your hair as a teenager!
Apple Cider Vinegar
This amazing multi-purpose liquid not only helps with digestion and overall health when consumed, (tastes gross but has countless benefits) it contains alpha hydroxy acids, which are known to help lighten sun and age spots. Cut it with water or olive oil if it feels too harsh on your skin.
