It seems like everyone is a health-nut these days. Eating right and exercise have become the norm; gone are the days of pizza and beers for dinner! Well, most days...
Wallethub conducted an in-depth analysis of the Healthiest Cities in America for 2017, and D.C. scored in the top 10 at the number nine spot! I'm actually surprised we didn't rank higher on this list considering the number of boutique fitness gyms that have opened in the District, the sheer volume of runners that can be seen on the mall and the increase in health-conscious restaurant openings as of late.
To identify places where health is a priority, Wallethub’s analysts compared 150 of the largest U.S. cities across 34 key metrics. The data set ranges from “cost of doctor visit” to “fruit and vegetable consumption” to “fitness clubs per capita.”
Here are a few of the key findings for DC:
- We're 1st in running trails per capita and 11th in walking trails per capita
- We're 1st in physical activity access
- We're 3rd in adult health insurance coverage and youth health insurance coverage
- We're 4th in quality of parks
- We're 6th in city "greenness"
- We're 9th in hospital beds per capita
- We're 10th in healthy restaurants per capita
- We're 10th in farmer's markets per capita
But you know where we don't rank so high? We are ranked 133rd in average cost of fitness club memberships -- a.k.a it's expensive as all get out to workout in DC! And we are the fifth worst city regarding access to healthy foods, which is definitely a statistic we should be concerned by.
