In case you have not heard, Wednesday March 8 is International Women's Day! Women everywhere have chosen to mark the day in a variety of ways, with some wearing red to show their support and others choosing only to patronize female-owned businesses for the day. Rallies have been organized across the country to celebrate the strength of women and the impact they have on society. But many women are choosing to participate in a larger movement promoted by the organizers of the Women's March on Washington that occurred on Jan. 21 called "A Day Without A Woman." The strike encourages women to take the day off from paid or unpaid labor for "a one-day demonstration of economic solidarity."
In the same spirit of love and liberation that inspired the Women's March, we join together in making March 8th A Day Without a Woman, recognizing the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic system--while receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment, and job insecurity. We recognize that trans and gender nonconforming people face heightened levels of discrimination, social oppression and political targeting. We believe in gender justice.
VIDA Fitness decided to participate in the festivities by offering free workouts to any woman who partakes in "A Day Without Women" at any of their six locations in the District.
"We would not, and could not, be who we are as a company without the women in our organization," says VIDA's President/Founder David von Storch. "We are grateful for the contribution of this sometimes undervalued group of talented and passionate professionals. While we try to do this every day, today in particular we express our gratitude and support."
Women can choose to use the gym's facilities to conduct their own workout, or join a group fitness class between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 11 p.m. Guests simply check in at the reception desk and state that they would like to workout on their day off and they will be given a complimentary workout pass.
“Women make up over half of our community at VIDA, and they play an integral role in our company’s success and operations," says Elise Chetien, Assistant Director of Marketing at VIDA and one of the organizers of the promotion. "... We are happy to open our doors to all the women in the district today, and fully support our female team members choosing to participate in the Day Without A Woman movement.”
