Just south of Rehoboth and north of Bethany sits Dewey Beach, the type of town where visitors subsist on lobster rolls by day and jello shots by night. But while it carries a reputation for a vibrant nightlife, Dewey also offers plenty of family activities.
Where to Stay
While many visitors opt for rentals, there also are a number of hotels in Dewey, including:
The Bay Resort: Enjoy the view from a secluded cove with a lengthy pier into the bay at this hotel, offering extended stays and amenities such as flat-screen TVs and watersport equipment rental.
Atlantic View Hotel: Atlantic View is aptly named, as the property is directly on the beach, and gives guests complimentary breakfast as well as beach seating to move seamlessly from room to sand.
Where to Eat
Sunrise Restaurant: Just steps from the beach, find all-day breakfast as well as gyros and subs here.
Nalu Surf Bar and Grill: Hawaiian food is the specialty at Naul, with guava-glazed ribs, pan-seared coconut shrimp and island style Crab Louie on the menu.
Hammerheads Dewey Beach: Try the “coldest draft beer in town” at Hammerheads, which might help you muster the courage to take the Shark Bite Challenge: Eat 10 wings soaked in a Trinidad moruga scorpion pepper sauce in 10 minutes with five minutes of “burn time.”
Dewey Beer Co. Brewery and Kitchen: Snag some street corn nachos or an oyster po’boy here, and pair it with the craft beer brewed “30 feet or less” away from your dining table.
Woody's Dewey Beach Bar and Grill: It may take a while to choose something from Woody’s menu, since it covers a wide terrain of apps, raw bar, pizza, salads, sandwiches and an “ultimate” brownie, but start with what Woody’s is known for—its crabcakes.
What to Do
The beach has plenty to offer in terms of water sports and just general relaxation. Pick up apparel or sign up for lessons at Dewey Beach Surf Shop, and consider renting a kayak or heading out on a banana boat ride with Dewey Beach Water Sports.
As the day moves toward evening, take a stroll on the beach, where you might find a family film or bonfire already underway as part of the town’s Summer Movies and Bonfires program. And if you’re ready for the full Dewey experience, bar hop among its many nightclubs, most notably The Starboard, Bottle and Cork, Rusty Rudder and North Beach.
Our Analysis: If you’re ready to relive the magic of your favorite spring break trip, Dewey Beach is a good place to do it.
