Jumbo mumbo: D.C.'s iconic sauce is popping up around town

The story of mumbo sauce is as complex as the condiment itself. Some claim its origins lie in Chicago in the 1950s; others insist it was invented in the District a decade later. Many are die-hard devotees to the special sauce, and others are "annoyed" by its existence. The ingredients are fiercely debated, but a bottle might include some or all of the following: ketchup, Tabasco, vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, chilies and lemon juice. Even the name isn’t codified. Depending on whom you ask, it’s spelled mumbo or mambo.

No matter what, the spicy sweet ‘n’ sour sauce has earned a hardcore following. Click through the gallery to see seven saucy spots to check out when the cravings hit.
