5 luxuriously indulgent Virginia wine tasting experiences

The arrival of spring in D.C. means it's time to start planning weekend trips to the wineries! Now, of course, any outing to a winery is a fun experience, but there are some that sail above the others. Several of the wineries around us have created a custom experience with unbeatable luxury. Here are a few of the nicest options to try this spring.

Potomac Point Winery

This is a great option for large groups, which might not always be encouraged in other wineries. Gather your friends, get a private tour of the facility, and then enjoy a private tasting in the production area. The wine tasting options are extremely reasonable; the premier tasting experience, which includes the reserve wines, is only $12 for a tasting of 9-12 wines. Following that, get your choice of bottle/glass and find a spot in the courtyard to enjoy it. The bistro onsite will take care of all your dining needs with a selection of savory small plates, side salads, cheese platters and entrees available. By appointment only.

RdV Vineyards

This is definitely one of the priciest options around, but it is easily worth it if you want a more serious understanding of the wine making process and a detailed tasting. The $65 experience comes with an in depth tour, followed by a seated tasting that is paired with a locally sources cheese and a charcuterie board. The tasting proceeds at your speed, and is a fantastic way to appreciate and enjoy the winery experience. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains, the grounds and facility are as impressive as the wines. By Appointment only.

Barboursville is a popular vineyard with excellent wines, and for good reason. The library tasting at Barboursville features some of the best vintages produced over the last three decades. The $25 experience includes selected vintages and culinary pairings in the library room, which overlooks the sloping vines and a large patio. You can't go wrong with gorgeous scenery and beautiful wine. The 1804 Inn onsite also offers a variety of accommodations, and is a great option to stay overnight to really enjoy all the wine that Barboursville has to offer.

Stone Tower Winery

At this premium vineyard located in Loudoun County, the vineyard and winery tour option is a wonderful way to explore the grounds of the stunning winery, while tasting the current vintages along the way. It costs $45, but the experience is really unique as sipping wines next to the vines they were created from is something to remember. If you want to branch out, try one of their focused tours, such as the Riesling tasting which will turn your ideas about Riesling on their head.

Chateau Morrisette Elite tasting

This winery is known for being extremely dog friendly, but also for its beautiful chateau. For an intimate wine experience, schedule an elite wine tasting, which will include a selection of 10 wines from their current vintages. Depending on the season, there might even be a barrel tastings from the cellar or a taste of a reserve wine from one of the older vintages. Pairings usually include artisan cheese, charcuterie and chocolates! The tastings cost $40 per person and require pre-payment and advance reservations.
