If you spent any time in D.C. in your early 20s, you're probably familiar with the concept of a bar crawl. You know, those lovely events where you pay for the privilege of being in a bar you typically can go to for free all in the name of drinking slightly discounted, overly sugary cocktails/shots, or a Bud Light. Sweat Concierge, a fitness class review site, is "flipping the script" on bar crawls with SweatCon Rally coming back to D.C. for a second year on May 18, and instead of drinking your way around town, you'll sweat your way around.
The premise is simple. You pick a neighborhood whose boutique fitness studios you want to explore, and you sign up for three 30-minute fitness classes, back to back to back giving you a chance to dip your toe in the boutique fitness world before you commit. Neighborhoods include Dupont, Logan Circle, 14th Street, Downtown, NoMa and for the first time Clarendon; this year the most in demand neighborhood is shaping up to be Logan Circle. 250 participants are expected, and each group will have between 13 and 30 people taking classes together.
"We want Washingtonians to connect with other like-minded individuals and experiences classes they haven't taken before," says Sweat Concierge founder Tori Scott. "60 percent of attendees will have tried one or fewer of the studios they will be taking classes in, so we hope Sweat Con makes the boutique fitness world a little less intimidating."
To ease you in to the active day, you'll first attend a welcome party, where you can pick up a swag bag, fuel up with healthy bites and juices, get your hair braided by the experts from GlamSquad and take a cute selfie with your fitness besties in the photobooth.
Sweat Con was hosted in D.C. for the first time in 2018, but has happened five times in Boston, twice in NYC and once in San Diego. Scott says she would love to make it a regular event in D.C., perhaps hosting two cons a year.
"Our goal is to bring Sweat Con to as many U.S. cities as possible, and San Francisco, Austin, Miami and Chicago are the next cities we are looking at."
