I’m always impressed by the rooms in luxury hotels -- the bedrooms feel like a sanctuary from the outside world. For my own bedroom, I wanted to create a similar feeling. I wanted the room to have a feeling of calm and be a place to relax and unwind. By following these seven simple tips, you too can make your bedroom feel like a luxurious hotel retreat.
Declutter
Decluttering will give you a clean slate to work with. In high-end hotel rooms, only the essentials are present. Save the art and knick-knacks for the finishing touches.
Pick a Color Scheme
Neutrals or soothing colors such as blues and greens will give an overall calm feeling to the room.
Layer Texture
Bring added interest into the space by incorporating texture, and layer multiple textures of a similar hue to make the room feel more luxurious. For the bedding, get different throw pillows and shams to add and layer texture. If you are looking for a romantic feeling, create a feature wall behind your bed by covering an entire wall in gauzy curtains from floor to ceiling. Finally, treat yourself to high thread count sheets -- they are definitely worth the splurge!
Hide Unsightly Items
Hide all the ugly but necessary items such as clothes bins and electronics. Instead of having all your electronics such as a TV, dvd player etc. on display, try hiding them behind an oversized piece of art (use a photo or painting on canvas, it is much lighter to move). For your dirty clothes, opt for beautiful baskets that look like art themselves.
Set The Mood With Lighting
Having multiple lighting options in the bedroom is key. Lighting is so important and it really helps set the tone of a space. Start with the basics: two bedside lamps. Don't shy away from mixing things up a bit with interesting shapes and heights, and remember, the lamps don't have to match. Incorporate a chandelier or lighting feature on the ceiling, as this will draw your eye up and make the room feel larger. Pro tip: have all your lighting on dimmers, and don’t forget about candles.
Add A Chair
If you have the space, adding a chair into your bedroom is a game changer. It is a great place to put on your socks and shoes in the morning, watch TV or simply curl up with a good book. You can create a cozy nook by adding a small side table and ottoman to maximize your bedroom space.
Art
To make a statement in your space, incorporate art that represents your tastes and style. To stay within a budget, make your own art with ordinary objects such as antlers or pompoms. Photos and paintings are also great options. The secret to great homemade art is repeating the same item over and over again. You can read more about my tips on creating art in your home here. And don’t forget to shop local, since D.C. has some incredible artists!
With these simple steps, you’ll transform the most important room in your house into a boutique hotel room that you won’t want to leave.
